Introducing the brand new laser pointer in Pencil Spaces

Discover the newest online teaching tool for tutors and teachers in Pencil Spaces: the laser pointer. Here’s how you can use it in your next session.

In most virtual classrooms, when you need to point something out on the whiteboard, you might use a pen or highlighter to circle it. This gets the job done, but it also leaves marks that you’ll likely need to erase later.

That’s why we just shipped the brand new laser pointer in Pencil Spaces. Now, it’s easier than ever to direct your students’ attention to a specific part of the whiteboard, without worrying about leaving marks behind. And, of course, it’s pretty fun to play around with, too!

Use the laser pointer to quickly and temporarily highlight something on the board.

Whether you’re walking through a maths problem, pinpointing a specific section of a diagram, or emphasizing an important detail in your lesson material, the laser pointer is a quick way to ensure that your students know exactly where to look.

To use it, select it from the Pen tools in the whiteboard toolbar, then use your mouse to move over the area you want to highlight. The pointer will follow your cursor as you move, with a slight delay so that the trail stays visible as you move around the board. Once you’re done, the trail disappears entirely.

The laser pointer is available to students, so they can also use it to draw attention to things on the board when needed. If you need to keep the focus on your lesson, you can simply lock the Space to prevent students from using the laser pointer.

We’re thrilled to give you another way to make teaching in Pencil Spaces feel a little more natural. Sometimes, all you need is a quick and easy way to say “look here” without leaving a mark behind.

Ready to give it a try? Open a Pencil Space and try out the new laser pointer today. And if you want to learn more about where to find it and how to use it, check out our laser pointer guide in the Help Desk.
