One classroom, every screen.
How do you teach?
Before you plan a lesson, you need to know it will run on the devices your people actually have. Pencil Spaces runs in current Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, on computers, tablets and phones.
Before you take on a new student, check their setup will work. Pencil Spaces runs in the latest Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge, on laptops, tablets and phones, with nothing to install.
If you run online classes, you need one answer for every family’s device question. Here are the browsers, operating systems and minimum specs Pencil Spaces supports.
Before a training, IT will ask what participants need. Here are the supported browsers, operating systems and minimum hardware, so you can answer in one email.
Before you plan around Pencil Spaces, check it runs on your school’s devices. It supports ChromeOS 110 or later, Windows, macOS and iPads, in current browsers.

The problem
Finding out on the day that a device won’t work
A lesson planned around a tool that won’t run on a student’s device fails before it starts. Device questions should be answered before the first lesson, not during it.
The usual way
People usually test on the day and hope. When something doesn’t run, the lesson waits while someone hunts for system requirements.
How Pencil Spaces solves it
One classroom on every screen, in the browser with nothing to install, in the latest Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge, with a 4 Mbps connection recommended.
- Phones: iPhone Xs or later on iOS 13 or later, and Android 7.0 or later, in the latest mobile browser or with the Pencil Spaces app on Google Play; some features may not be available on phones because of browser and technical limits.
- Tablets: iPad Air 3 (2019) and later on iPadOS 13 or later, and Android tablets on Android 7.0 or later, with touch and stylus input.
- Mac: macOS 11 Big Sur or later, Apple silicon (M1 or later) or an Intel processor with 2 cores at 2 GHz, and 4 GB of memory.
- PC: Windows 10 or later, ChromeOS 110 or later, or Ubuntu 18.04 or later, with 2 cores at 2 GHz and 4 GB of memory, in the latest Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

What it looks like
In practice
Before rollout, a program lead checks the list below. The Chromebooks run ChromeOS 110 or later and the office laptops run Windows 10 or later, so everyone is covered.
In a 1:1 lesson
A new family asks if their iPad will work. You check: iPad Air 3 (2019) or later on iPadOS 13 or later is supported, so their 2020 iPad is fine.
In a group class
A parent asks whether their child can join class from an Android phone. Android 7.0 or later works in the latest mobile browser or the Pencil Spaces app, though some features may not be available on phones.
In a virtual training
IT asks what participants need for your virtual training. You send the list: the latest Chrome, Firefox or Edge, Windows 10 or later or macOS 11 or later, and a 4 Mbps connection recommended.
In your classroom
Your school’s Chromebooks are on a recent ChromeOS. The list says 110 or later is supported, so the whole cart is ready.
In the training room
Before an offsite, you check the laptops: Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later both work with 4 GB of memory, so every participant’s machine is covered.
At home
Your family laptop runs Windows 11 and the tablet is an iPad from 2021. Both are on the supported list, so your daughter can use either.
