Understanding Score
Know what landed.
A student says “I get it” when they don’t, and the gap is easy to miss live. The Understanding Score, in development, will estimate how much of your explanation the student is actually understanding, live and in a summary afterwards.
Your student nods along, and you find out next week they were lost. Soon you’ll see a live understanding signal, with moments of confusion flagged as they happen.
With a class on video, you can’t read every face. Soon, a live understanding signal and flagged moments of confusion will tell you when to slow down.
Nods on video don’t mean the group has it. Soon, a live understanding signal will show when to slow down, with a summary afterwards.
For lessons taught in a Space, a live understanding signal will flag moments of confusion, shown only to you. In development.
For workshops run in a Space, a live understanding signal will flag confusion as it happens, shown only to the facilitator. In development.
Your child’s tutor will know when your child is lost, even when they say “I get it.”

The problem
“I get it” that isn’t true
What a tutor says and what a student understands aren’t the same thing. The gap is easy to miss live, and the lesson moves on without them.
一般的な方法
Tutors ask “Does that make sense?” and trust the answer.
How Pencil Spaces solves it
What a tutor says and what a student understands are not the same thing, and the gap is easy to miss live. The Understanding Score will use AI to estimate how much of what the tutor is explaining the student is actually understanding. The tutor will see a live signal and flagged moments of confusion during the lesson, and a summary afterwards to plan the next one. It is shown to the tutor, not the student. In development.

What we’re building
- A live understanding signal for the tutor
- Moments of confusion flagged as they happen
- A summary of each lesson afterwards
- Shown to the tutor, not the student
What it looks like
実際には
A tutor explains slope. The live signal dips and a moment of confusion is flagged, so she slows down and tries a graph. Afterwards, the summary shows where understanding dropped, and she plans the next lesson around it.
In a 1:1 lesson
You see confusion flagged at the second step, go back, and the signal recovers.
In a group class
The signal dips during your explanation of cell division, so you add an example before moving on.
In a virtual training
The summary shows the group lost the thread on the pricing section, and you revisit it next time.
In your classroom
After the lesson, the summary shows where understanding dropped, and you plan tomorrow’s warm-up around it.
In the training room
A flagged moment tells you the group is lost, and you pause for questions.
At home
Your son’s tutor notices he’s confused about fractions before he admits it.
