Before
Pick the location
Schedule the lesson with Online Pencil Space as its location.
A student and teacher pair shares one Space. A group lesson gets its own, and a repeating group series shares one.
Reminder emails include a join link through the {LOCATION} tag.
During
Launch from anywhere in Teachworks
Everyone launches the lesson from Teachworks: the calendar, the dashboard, Lesson History or their profile.
Teachers join as teachers and students as students.

Boards stay in the Space, so the next lesson starts where this one ended.

Setup
Connected in three steps.
You need a Teachworks account, a paid Pencil Spaces plan and a few minutes.
Generate your API key.
In Pencil Spaces, open Settings › API & Integrations and click Generate API Key. Copy it somewhere safe; it’s shown only once.
Turn on the add-on.
In Teachworks, go to Account › Integrations & Add-ons, search for Pencil Spaces, turn it on, and paste your API key in its settings.
Schedule with it.
Choose Online Pencil Space as the location when you schedule a lesson. Everyone can launch it from Teachworks.
FAQ
Questions, answered.
Do tutors and students need Pencil Spaces accounts?
No. When they launch the lesson from Teachworks, they’re signed in automatically, as teacher or student.
Is it a new Space every lesson?
No. A student and teacher pair shares one Space, and so does a repeating group series. A one-off group lesson gets its own Space.
Do reminders include the link?
Yes. Reminder templates that use the {LOCATION} merge tag include a join link for each person.
Which Pencil Spaces plan do I need?
A paid plan, since API keys aren’t available on the free account. New customers get a two-week free trial on any paid plan.
Who can create the API key?
Institution Admins, in Settings › API & Integrations. The key is shown only once, so store it somewhere safe.
How is student data protected?
Pencil Spaces is FERPA, COPPA, GDPR and SOC 2 Type II compliant, and ISO 27001 certified.
