Your first classroom in three steps.
Follow the quickstart, or talk to us if you want a staging environment first.
Generate your API key.
An Institution Admin opens Settings › API & Integrations in Pencil Spaces and clicks Generate API Key. Copy it somewhere safe; it’s shown only once.
Create a user and a Space.
Send your key as a Bearer token. Create an API user, then create a Space with them as host or participant.
Log them in.
Request a login link for the user and open it in a new tab or an iframe. Links work for one hour.

Which Pencil Spaces plans include API access?
API access comes with our usage-based and Enterprise plans. Talk to our team about the right fit, including API access during a free trial.
Can I embed Spaces in my own app?
Yes. Open a Space in an iframe served over HTTPS, with camera, microphone and screen sharing allowed. The standalone option keeps users in the classroom, and startCall starts the call for hosts; add skipCallHostCheck to start it for everyone.
How do users sign in?
Create API users, then request a login link for each one. There are no passwords to manage, and each link expires after one hour.
Are there rate limits?
Yes. Ask our team for the current limits before you build anything high-volume.
Is there a test environment?
Yes. We can set up a staging environment for you on request.
Who can create API keys?
Institution Admins, in Settings › API & Integrations. Each key is shown only once.
How is student data protected?
Pencil Spaces is FERPA, COPPA, GDPR and SOC 2 Type II compliant, and ISO 27001 certified.
