Tuned In · Student engagement alertsRead the room, even on video.

When a student switches to another tab or app mid-lesson, Tuned In quietly lets you know, so you can bring them back before they fall behind.

Maya is on the lesson. Send her to another tab and see what you’d see.

On a call, everyone looks tuned in.

In a classroom you’d catch it at a glance. On video, a student can be in another tab and look exactly the same. Tuned In notices for you.

Tuned out.

Another tab. Another app.

Tuned in.

Back on the lesson.

How Tuned In works.

They drift.

A student switches to another tab or app.

You get a heads-up.

A quiet notification comes to you, the host.

You bring them back.

Ask a question, say their name, check in. Your call.

A quiet word, not a call-out.

See it in a real lesson.

A student wanders off to YouTube in the middle of a lesson. Watch what the tutor sees, and how the lesson gets back on track.

Built with care

It knows where. Never what.

Tuned In notices one thing: whether the Space is what a student is actively viewing. It never shows you what’s in their other tab or app.

Where, never what.

An alert tells you a student has left the lesson. Not where they went, and not what they’re doing there.

Made for small groups.

Built for one-on-one and small-group lessons. With five or more people in the Space, alerts stay quiet to keep the noise down.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is Tuned In in Pencil Spaces?

Tuned In is the student engagement alert built into Pencil Spaces. When a participant switches to another browser tab or app during a lesson, the host gets a quiet notification, so they can bring the student back before they fall behind.

Can a tutor see when a student switches tabs during an online lesson?

In Pencil Spaces, yes. Tuned In notifies the host when a participant is no longer actively viewing the Space, for example after switching to another browser tab or app. From the notification, the host can dismiss it, mute alerts, or open the participant list for more details.

Does Tuned In show what’s on a student’s screen?

No. An alert only tells you that the student is no longer viewing the Space. It never shows what they’re doing in another tab or app.

Does it work in group classes?

Tuned In is built for one-on-one and small-group lessons. When five or more people are in the Space, alerts are hidden to keep notifications from piling up.

How do I turn Tuned In on or off?

Tuned In is on for every new account. To change it, open Settings from your dashboard, choose AI Assist under Institution, and switch Tuned In on or off under In Session. Changes apply from your next session.

Is Tuned In the same as Distraction Alerts?

Yes. Tuned In is the new name for the Pencil Spaces feature previously called Distraction Alerts.

Keep every student tuned in.

Tuned In is on for every new Pencil Spaces account, so your next lesson is the first one it can help with.
