The short version
A safe place to start, every lesson.
The challenge
Needs mainstream school isn’t meeting
Many of Love2Learn’s students live with high levels of anxiety. For some, learning in person isn’t an option, and no specialist tutor is close enough to visit.
What Love2Learn built
Low-demand lessons online
Students build a welcome board over their lessons, a familiar place to start. Tutors begin with games and drawing, then bring in academic work through the student’s interests.
What happened
A way back into learning
One student, out of school for years, now learns online and in person. Love2Learn insists its tutors teach online on Pencil Spaces.
One student’s story
Out of school for years, learning again.
One Love2Learn student had been out of school for a number of years. In-person lessons weren’t an option, and no specialist tutor lived close enough to work with them. They also lived in a different city from Kirsty.
So Kirsty taught them herself, online on Pencil Spaces, and kept every demand low. They played games built on the student’s interests and drew together. Academic work came in gradually, through those same interests.
Eighteen months later
After about 18 months, Love2Learn recruited a tutor to work with the student in person. Today the student learns in a hybrid model: online on Pencil Spaces with one tutor, and in person with another.
Kirsty is clear about what made that step possible. The work they did together on Pencil Spaces was its foundation.
Inside a lesson
Interactive, by design.
Love2Learn’s learners need lessons they can take part in. Typing into a chat box on a video call isn’t enough, so tutors teach on a board they share with the student.
A welcome board of their own
Students build up a home board, or welcome board, over their lessons, with things like their favorite characters. It’s a familiar, safe place to start.
Games before demands
Tutor and student play two-player games and draw together. Visual supports sit right on the board, for students who need them.
Math, with the right tools
Tutors draw shapes, pull up resources and use interactive tools together with the student.
The same Space every week
Each student returns to the same Space, so last week’s boards are waiting where they left them.
Running Love2Learn
One platform, every tutor.
Kirsty saw a demo of Pencil Spaces at a conference, tried it and signed up almost straight away. Today it’s the standard for Love2Learn’s online teaching.
One login, through TutorCruncher
Love2Learn connects TutorCruncher to Pencil Spaces. Each student has one login and one Space that looks the same every lesson, which matters for students with SEND.
Love2Learn insists its tutors teach online on Pencil Spaces. Kirsty says it has raised the standard of online teaching across the company.
Progress students can see
Tutors archive old lessons in folders, like a set of books. Students who learn with Love2Learn for 2 or 3 years can look back at their own progress.
“I recommend Pencil Spaces all the time when people are asking for an interactive platform to tutor on. I haven’t seen a better platform. It’s the best one that I have come across.”

Questions
About Love2Learn and Pencil Spaces.
What is Love2Learn Education?
Love2Learn Education is a tutoring company in Birmingham, UK, for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Many of its students are those whose needs mainstream school isn’t meeting. Founder and principal Kirsty Fox, a SEND-qualified teacher, leads a team of more than 40 educators with expertise in different areas of SEND.
How does Love2Learn use Pencil Spaces?
All of Love2Learn’s online teaching happens on Pencil Spaces. Each student comes back to the same Space, where they may have a welcome board they’ve built. Tutor and student play games, draw, use visual supports and work through math together on a shared board. Old lessons are archived in folders, so students can see their own progress.
How does Pencil Spaces work with TutorCruncher?
Love2Learn connects TutorCruncher to Pencil Spaces. Each TutorCruncher job gets its own Space, and tutors and students sign in from TutorCruncher, with no links to share. For Love2Learn’s students, that means one login and one platform that looks the same every lesson.
Can online lessons work for students with high anxiety?
They have for Love2Learn. One student, out of school for years, started with low-demand online lessons built around games, drawing and their own interests. After about 18 months, they moved to a hybrid of online and in-person learning. Kirsty Fox calls the online work the foundation for that step.
Can other SEND tutoring companies run lessons like this on Pencil Spaces?
Yes. Pencil Spaces runs one-to-one and small-group lessons for tutoring companies, schools and independent tutors, on laptops, Chromebooks and tablets with nothing to install. It connects to TutorCruncher and other tutoring software. Get a demo and we’ll walk through Spaces, lessons and scheduling for your team.
