How EduPrism teaches groups of five onlineand sees every student’s working

EduPrism Learning has taught its live online classes on Pencil Spaces since December 2021. Specialist tutors teach students in Years 5–12 across Australia in groups of five or fewer, with the same tutor every week. Each group meets in its own Space, where the board, every student’s working and every recorded lesson stay in one place.

The short version

Small groups that stay small on screen.

The challenge

A quiet student can hide online

Dr Singh started EduPrism for capable students who go unnoticed in big classes. Online, a camera can hide them just as well. Tutors needed to see every student’s working, live.

What EduPrism built

One Space for every group

Each group meets in the same Space every week. The tutor leads the shared board, students show their working on it, and every lesson is recorded.

What happened

Almost five years of weekly classes

EduPrism has taught on Pencil Spaces since December 2021, from Year 5 math to VCE and UCAT preparation. Along the way, Dr Singh has helped shape what we build.

The model

One tutor, one group, for the long run.

Dr Indramohan Singh spent 15 years teaching, from university lecture halls to high school tutoring, before he founded EduPrism. He had watched capable students fall behind unnoticed in large classes, so he built EduPrism around small groups instead.

Every family starts with a free 60-minute diagnostic and a written report. Students are then grouped by level and pace, five at most, and stay with the same specialist tutor. EduPrism’s tutors hold PhDs, master’s degrees or deep subject expertise.

Lessons follow EduPrism’s PRISM method: find each student’s gaps, check understanding before moving on, teach the structure under a problem, build strategy and confirm mastery. Parents get notes after every lesson and a formal review every four weeks.

Why the online room had to work

EduPrism teaches live online, so families anywhere in Australia can learn with a specialist. Parents ask fair questions about that: whether a child will drift to another tab, whether the tutor will know they understand, and how math works without pen and paper.

EduPrism’s answer is in how the lesson runs. Students solve problems and explain their reasoning aloud. They write their working on the shared board, or work on paper and show it to the tutor, so every step is seen as it happens.

On Pencil Spaces since 2021

Built with a teacher in the room.

EduPrism was one of our early tutoring companies. Dr Singh has always told us plainly what his classes need.

  1. December 2021

    EduPrism joins

EduPrism sets up on Pencil Spaces, with its own Spaces for each group of students.

  2. 2022–23

    Weekly calls with our team

Dr Singh meets our product team every week to go through his classes, from Lead to course materials.

  3. Late 2022

A class moves over from Zoom

Within two minutes, the new students had made more than 100 boards. Tutors can now decide whether students may add boards.

  4. 2025–26

    First to try new tools

EduPrism is among the first on new parts of Pencil Spaces, including a faster whiteboard and AI Coach feedback on recorded lessons.

Inside a lesson

Everyone’s working, in plain sight.

Each EduPrism group meets in the same Space every week. The worksheet is already on the board when students arrive, so the lesson goes to teaching, not setup.

Lead the group

Tutors turn on Lead to bring all five students to the same part of the board, then turn it off so students can work on their own.

Worksheets on the board

PDFs and practice questions go straight onto the board, so students write on the real task, not a copy.

A private board for feedback

Dr Singh adds one student to a private board to give one-to-one feedback and track their progress between lessons.

The same Space every week

Boards and working are waiting where the group left them, lesson after lesson.

Après le cours

What the tutor has when the lesson ends.

EduPrism’s Spaces record every lesson automatically, with the shared screen included. Here is what tutors get from it.

A recording of every lesson

Recording starts by itself, so Dr Singh can go back to any group’s lesson without anyone remembering to press record.

A summary to pass on

After each lesson, a summary sets out what was covered. Dr Singh likes them detailed, so he can forward them straight to his students.

Feedback from AI Coach

AI Coach reviews recorded lessons and points out what worked and what to try next time. EduPrism was one of the first to use it.

Roles that fit the team

Tutors host their own groups’ Spaces, teaching assistants help run them, and students can’t change a Space’s details.

For other tutoring companies

Running small groups online? Five ideas from EduPrism.

Start with a diagnostic, then group by level

EduPrism begins with a free diagnostic and a written report for every family, then forms groups by level and pace, not by timetable.

Keep the group small and the tutor the same

Five students at most, with one specialist from the first lesson to the exam. Students tell a tutor they know what they don’t understand.

Make every student show their working

Ask students to solve live on the board and explain their reasoning aloud. The tutor catches the slip as it happens, not weeks later in a test.

Put the real task on the board

Load the worksheet or practice paper as a PDF before the lesson. Students write on the actual task, and it’s still there next week.

Close the loop with families

Send notes after every lesson and hold a progress review every four weeks. Parents see the evidence and stay part of the plan.

Questions

About EduPrism and Pencil Spaces.

What is EduPrism Learning?

EduPrism Learning is an Australian tutoring company founded by Dr Indramohan Singh. Its specialist tutors teach Years 5–12 math, science and English, plus selective entry, UCAT and GAMSAT preparation, in live online groups of up to five. Each student keeps the same tutor, and every family starts with a free diagnostic.

How does EduPrism use Pencil Spaces?

EduPrism teaches its live online classes on Pencil Spaces. Each group meets in its own Space, with a shared board, video and chat. Tutors use Lead to keep the group together, put worksheets on the board as PDFs and give one-to-one feedback on private boards. Every lesson is recorded automatically.

How long has EduPrism used Pencil Spaces?

Since December 2021. Through 2022 and into 2023, founder Dr Indramohan Singh met our product team every week to go through his classes. EduPrism is often among the first to use new parts of Pencil Spaces, such as AI Coach feedback on recorded lessons.

How do tutors see each student’s work in an online group?

In Pencil Spaces, students write on the same board as the tutor, live, so every line of working shows up as it happens. Tutors can also add one student to a private board for one-to-one feedback. Lead brings the whole group to the tutor’s view when it’s time to explain.

Did Pencil Spaces cause EduPrism’s results?

No single tool does. EduPrism’s results come from its tutors, its small groups and its PRISM method. Pencil Spaces is where that teaching happens online: it keeps every student’s working in view, records each lesson and keeps each group’s boards in one Space from week to week.

Can other tutoring companies run small groups like EduPrism’s on Pencil Spaces?

Yes. Pencil Spaces runs one-to-one and small-group tutoring for tutoring companies of every size, in the browser on laptops, Chromebooks and tablets, with nothing to install. Try it free for 2 weeks on any paid plan, or get a demo and we’ll walk through groups, recordings and roles for your team.
